Emotional "Coaching" for Gifted Children

Learning to cope with emotions is a normal part of growing up. But parents of gifted children sometimes face added challenges due to the emotional intensity many gifted children experience. "Gifted kids are a unique and challenging group – for teachers and for parents. They view the world through an entirely unique lens, one that is best summed in one word: Intense, " says Christine Fonseca, author of Emotional Intensity in Gifted Children Are you looking for resources on this issue? Fonseca outlines several steps parents can take to help children understand and deal with their emotions in an article from the Davidson Institute for Talented and Gifted. And Jim Delisle, who will be presenting "The Intensities of Gifted Children" at Center for Talent Development's Opportunities for the Future conference June 25, has also compiled some tips for raising happy children. Both authors remind us that intensity can be a good thing, when both child and parent learn to handle it productively. What do you think? Are these recommendations helpful? What are some of your tips for dealing with your gifted child's intensities?
