This course exposes students to how psychological research is utilized by medical and health professionals. Students will investigate the various methods psychologists utilize to answer research questions related to the prevention and treatment of illness and become acquainted with many of the most significant findings in the fields of behavioral medicine and health psychology. The course emphasizes thinking critically about the interdisciplinary fields that focus on the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that are relevant to the scientific study of health, well-being, and illness and how these impact prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. The medical field has become increasingly interdisciplinary in recent years, and this is reflected in the exam content of the MCAT exam for admission to medical school. One of the four sections of the MCAT exam involves the psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior that includes a focus on both psychology and sociology.
